Empowering the Next Generation of Women in Construction
The construction industry has long been perceived as a male-populated field, but times are changing. Women are making significant strides in construction, bringing innovation, leadership, and expertise to job sites, engineering firms, and manufacturing facilities. Women in Construction (WIC) Week, held annually during the first full week of March, highlights the invaluable contributions of women in the industry and promotes greater inclusion and opportunities for future generations.
At SwiftWall, we are proud to celebrate Women in Construction Week by actively participating in initiatives that inspire and empower young women to pursue careers in construction and engineering. This year, we were honored to take part in the “Build Like a Girl” event in Midland, Michigan, with our very own Leah Lindauer, SwiftWall’s Product Engineer, leading the way.
What is “Build Like a Girl”?
“Build Like a Girl” is a hands-on educational event designed to introduce young women to the construction industry through interactive activities, mentorship, and real-world experiences. Hosted in Midland, Michigan, the event brings together students, industry professionals, and educators to foster curiosity and confidence in young women interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and skilled trades.
The goal of “Build Like a Girl” is to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes by showing young women a career in construction is not only achievable but also rewarding. Through hands-on demonstrations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, participants gain insight into the many career paths available in the industry.
SwiftWall’s Role in “Build Like a Girl”
SwiftWall is committed to innovation and inclusivity in construction. Our participation in “Build Like a Girl” aligned perfectly with our mission to create a more diverse and dynamic industry. Leah Lindauer, our Product Engineer, played a pivotal role in representing SwiftWall at the event.
Leah Lindauer: Leading the Way for Women in Engineering
As a seasoned engineer with a passion for problem-solving and product development, Leah has been instrumental in advancing SwiftWall’s innovative wall solutions. At “Build It Like a Girl,” she shared her journey as a woman in construction, offering valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities she has encountered along the way.
Her participation included:
On the Planning Committee where she contributed to planning discussions, emphasizing the importance of persistence and passion in overcoming obstacles.
Leading a hands-on demonstration showcasing SwiftWall’s modular wall systems, allowing participants to engage in practical, skill-building exercises.
Mentoring young attendees, answering questions, and providing guidance on career paths in construction and engineering.
Breaking Down Barriers for Women in Construction
While the number of women in construction has steadily increased, the industry still has room for growth when it comes to gender diversity. According to the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), women make up approximately 10% of the construction workforce. Events like “Build Like a Girl” help close this gap by:
Encouraging young women to explore careers in construction and engineering.
Providing role models and mentors who have successfully navigated the industry.
Offering hands-on experiences that build confidence and practical skills.
Challenging outdated stereotypes and promoting gender inclusivity in construction.
Why Women Are Essential in Construction
Diversity in the workplace fosters innovation, collaboration, and improved problem-solving. Women bring unique perspectives and skills to the construction industry, contributing to:
Enhanced Project Management: Women excel in organization, multitasking, and leadership, making them valuable assets in project planning and execution.
Improved Safety and Efficiency: Studies have shown that diverse teams contribute to safer job sites and more efficient workflows.
Increased Innovation: With different perspectives come new ideas, driving technological advancements and improved construction practices.
Stronger Workplace Culture: A diverse workforce creates a more inclusive and supportive environment for all employees.
How to Support Women in Construction
Creating a more inclusive construction industry requires a collective effort from companies, educators, and individuals. Here’s how we can all contribute:
Promote STEM Education for Young Girls
Encouraging girls to explore STEM subjects at an early age lays the foundation for future careers in construction and engineering. Schools and community programs should provide more resources and mentorship opportunities.
Provide Mentorship and Networking Opportunities
Women who are already in the industry can make a significant impact by mentoring younger generations. Programs like NAWIC, Women in Construction Week, and Build Like a Girl play a crucial role in creating these opportunities.
Advocate for Equal Opportunities and Representation
Companies should actively work to hire, promote, and support women in leadership positions. Equal pay, career development programs, and inclusive workplace policies contribute to long-term success.
Highlight and Celebrate Female Achievements in Construction
Recognizing the accomplishments of women in construction helps inspire future generations and reinforces the importance of diversity in the field.
SwiftWall’s Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
At SwiftWall, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where talent and innovation thrive, regardless of gender. Our commitment to empowering women in construction goes beyond participation in events like “Build Like a Girl.” We actively support:
Diversity-focused hiring initiatives to encourage more women to join the industry.
Employee development programs to provide mentorship and career growth opportunities.
Educational outreach efforts to inspire young minds to consider careers in construction and engineering.
